Q: What do kids do at a Mad Science birthday party?
A: During the first 40-45 minutes, the Mad Scientist will engage children with amazing science demonstrations that are conducted with the help of your birthday child and guests. Some examples of experiments that may be included are: fitting a hardboiled egg into an impossibly small space, seeing flash paper disappear and creating bubbling potions with dry ice. During the final 10-15 minutes of the party, the kids will make slime, silly putty or a super-ball to take home. Upgrading to our longer length parties will add additional time for the children to take part in either: candy floss making, hovercraft rides, bubbling potions or even launching a rocket!
Q: How far in advance do I need to book my party?
A: Our party schedule fills up quickly. We suggest you book well in advance to get the date and time you want. Generally, at least 4 weeks in advance is recommended.
Q: What do I need to do to make a reservation?
A: You can fill out an online request form by clicking on the “Book now” button. We will respond to your request within one business day. You can also call us on 01159221113 and we’ll be happy to schedule your party over the phone. We require a non-refundable deposit of £50 at the time of booking and payment in full is required 3 working days before the party takes place.
Q: What time can I have my party?
A: Most people choose weekends and our usual party times are at 10.30am, 2pm or 5pm. We can deliver parties on weekdays, just contact us to request your date and time via the booking form.
Q: Do I need to know the exact number of kids attending my party to book it?
A: No. All we need is an estimate of the number of children you expect to attend. On the day of the party you will be charged only for the number additional children who attended should this apply.
Q: Do you have any themed parties?
A: All our themes revolve around science. If you have another party theme, we can notify the Mad Scientist, and he/she will do his/her best to incorporate your theme into the experiments and language that is used.
Q: When will the Mad Scientist arrive?
A: The Mad Scientist will arrive about 15 to 30 minutes early to set up. He/she will be ready to start the show at the time you booked.
Q: When kind of venue do I need?
A: That is entirely up to you and we will travel to homes, scout huts, parish halls, hotels, wedding receptions - anywhere! Our parties have been designed to be suitable for a domestic setting, however for birthdays many parents choose to hire a village hall or community centre type venue so they can invite the whole class. The hover-board add-on is only suitable for venues with lots of space and a large, hard floor surface due to the nature of the activity. Similarly the Rocket has an outside requirement (as well as good weather!)
Q: What kind of space is needed?
A: Ideally we need a table for the Mad Scientists to set out his/her equipment. We ask that you have enough space for the Mad Scientist to present at the front of the room and for your guests to be comfortable as well. The kids can be seated on the floor or on chairs, several feet back from the table or presentation area.
Q: How much space is needed for the rocket launch?
A: The Mad Scientist will need a medium to large sized garden or open space to launch the rocket. If you are not sure whether you have sufficient space, you can always add the rocket launch and then the Mad Scientist will assess whether or not it is safe to launch the rocket on the day of the party. You will not be charged for the upgrade if the rocket cannot be launched safely – or we will bring along a replacement activity.
Q: Will I have to provide the Mad Scientist with anything?
A: We will need access to water for set-up and clean-up and access to electricity for some of our equipment. Please let us know if your party location cannot have either of these.
Q: Once I have scheduled my party, can I make changes to it later?
A: Any changes to your party must be scheduled a week before your party. We will call you at the start of the week to run through and confirm final details.
Q: Is it okay to have other activities going on while the Mad Scientist is performing?
A: The Mad Scientist will begin at the scheduled start time and deliver the first hour of party entertainment. If you are having add-on activities and would like a break for party food in between this needs to be arrange before-hand with us.
Q: Can I have the phone number of my Mad Scientist?
A: We do not provide the Mad Scientist’s personal contact information. However they will contact you by text before the party to let you know they are on their way. We do however have emergency contact numbers if necessary.
Q: For what ages are your parties appropriate?
A: Our parties are appropriate for children between 5 to 11 years of age. Younger siblings generally watch, but do not actively participate in the party and should not make a take home project. We determine the number of attendees based on the number of children who take part.
Q: When do I pay?
A: We need a non-refundable deposit to secure the booking and payment in full 3 days before the party takes place. On the day we take your booking we will send you an email confirmation of your party and send out your complimentary invitations through the post. You can pay by cheque, pay over the phone by card or via our online booking facility. We will call you at the start of the week before the party to run through final details and take payment if required.
Q: What is your policy on tipping?
A. If you think your Mad Scientist did a great job, a tip is very appreciated but not expected. This is entirely at your own discretion.
